Millennial Gardener Feature Month – Sarah

Sarah, like many millennials, is caught up in the hustle and bustle of planning a wedding. That being said, she has not let that keep her from putting her green thumb to work. She has a beautiful set of raised garden beds that I am just thrilled to share with you!

Name: Sarah Shelmidine

State: New York

Grow Zone: 4

Gardening style: Raised bed

How long have you been gardening: This is my first year.

Why do you garden: I really wanted to grow my own food and have a hobby. I really enjoyed watching the plants grow, and now being able to enjoy fresh veggies. I had wanted to try gardening for a few years – then I discovered raised garden beds and I was sold!

Do you typically garden alone or with friends/family/pets: My fiancé helped set up my gardens, and my dogs are around daily when we’re watering or picking veggies.

Biggest success of 2019 season: The peppers! They took the longest to grow, but they are doing the best by far! I made sure to wait to put them outside.

Most unfortunate failure of 2019 season: My cucumbers. Sadly the frost got to them! I grew them inside to start, but moved them outside way too early.

Favorite plant that you’ve ever grown: I really enjoy peppers, but I think my favorite is green onions. I use them often in cooking, and its great to go out back and get a fresh one!

What are you most looking forward to growing in the future: More varieties of peppers, and I’d like to try carrots and onions!

One last piece of advice for our readers: Go for it! I had not a clue what I was doing, I was so overwhelmed by garden sections in stores and I felt like I needed to buy everything. I have three small raised beds, and they are perfect. I don’t think I’ve done much by “the book,” but I’ve enjoyed learning about gardening and am much more prepared for next year.

This “last piece of advice” is one of my favorites, I could not agree more! The intricacies of gardening can be intimidating but you just have to dive in, accept that there will be failures and learn as much as possible each season. Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule, Sarah. I hope your big day is nothing short of perfect. Cheers, friends!
