Feature Month: Katie

Mom, fiancé, gardener, golfer, one might say that this amazing lady is the Jack of all trades and I’m here to tell you that she wears all of those hats like the queen of Churchill Downs — glamorously! It has been a true pleasure to watch Katie’s green thumb grow over the last couple of seasons and I look forward to seeing where the next ones take her. But, before I get ahead of myself, let’s see how this season went.

Name: Katie Cole

State: Maryland

Grow Zone: 7a

Gardening style (container, raised bed, tilled plot, etc.): I have a raised bed in our driveway and potted plants on my patio.

How long have you been gardening: I’ve been gardening for about 3 years with the help of my awesome friend Meg.

Why do you garden: I garden because it’s very relaxing and a fun hobby to participate in with my 5 year old son.

Do you typically garden alone or with friends/family/pets: I garden with my 5 year old son and sometimes my fiancé gets involved.

Biggest success of 2021 season: This year I planted my garden from seed. Feels like an insanely huge accomplishment from previously buying all of my plants that were typically started for me. These are my babies.

Most unfortunate failure (lesson) of 2021 season: My tomatoes were not doing well, so my neighbors secretly planted some tomatoes in my garden because I was so bummed about mine. For a week I thought I brought mine back to life.

What is your most used gardening tool: My most used gardening tool is my magical hands. Just kidding they are not magical but work good to pull the many weeds that pop up in my garden. I also pluck all of my amazing veggies with these hands.

Favorite plant that you’ve ever grown: My favorite plant that I have grown is my hot peppers. I make a ton of salsa and spicy hummus, it’s the best and so fresh.

What are you most looking forward to growing in the future: I look forward to growing pumpkins and green beans in the future. My dad grew pumpkins for Halloween when I was growing up so I would love to do the same for my son! Ethan’s favorite food is green beans. I think he would freak out if he got to help cook and eat his favorite food that he grew.

One last piece of advice for our readers: Don’t freak out if your seedlings do not make it. Grow more and keep trying! I am a ball of nerves waiting for my plants grow but it’s so fun and rewarding.

That last piece of advice is such a good one. Starting your own seeds is challenging for ALL gardeners, not just new gardeners. There are so many variables and some things are entirely out of your control, so they require a lot of improvisation. This can seem daunting BUT as Katie mentioned, it’s so rewarding to see your own little sprouts grow into thriving plants. Take the chance, plant plenty of extras (you can always share them if you’re too successful) and do your best to adapt and learn throughout the process. Thank you, Katie, for sharing your hard learned lessons with our readers. We wish you and little Ethan all the best next season. Cheers, friends!
